Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources wants to limit coal exports
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, said that he did not hesitate to form rules limiting coal exports if there was price pressure. Moreover, Indonesia contributes greatly to the world's coal needs.
Bahlil said that coal from Indonesia has a systemic, massive and structured impact on world needs. Even so, he admitted that he did not hesitate to tighten export regulations if coal prices continued to be pressured by the world.
“We make policies to tighten exports, but until now it has not. But if prices continue to be suppressed, it is also possible that we think differently,” Bahlil said in a press conference at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Jakarta, Monday (3/2/2025).
Bahlil said that Indonesia is recorded to export 555 million tons of coal throughout 2024. The trend increases over the year with details, 2020 as much as 405 million tons, 2021 as much as 435 million tons, 2022 as much as 465 million tons, 2023 as much as 518 million tons.
Meanwhile, the total world coal consumption, said Bahlil, is around 8 billion tons. However, there are 1.200 billion to 1.5 billion tons of coal circulating in the market.
“We supply approximately 555 million tons. That is equal to 30% to 35% of world consumption,” he explained.
In addition, Bahlil also explained that the domestic bond market in the coal sector is 233 million tons. This means, he said, the total coal used was 788 million tons throughout 2024.
Meanwhile, the coal stock that has not been used throughout 2024 is 48 million tons. Overall, the total coal produced throughout 2024 was 836 million tons, exceeding the target of 710 million tons.
“Don't count this one, this stock has not been used. So the calculation is 233 (million tons) that have been distributed to industry, and 555 (million tons) that have been calculated for export,” he concluded.
